Incremental modernisation
Modernisation does not have to mean a “big bang” project. Often the safer route is to replace one boundary at a time — a payment service, a reporting component, an integration, a web interface or a database layer — while the core business continues to operate.
When a rewrite is justified
Sometimes replacement is the right answer. If so, we prefer to make that decision from evidence: maintainability, security, availability of skills, operational cost and the business changes the old system prevents.
